Why-is-this-moving
How we attribute market price moves to underlying signals.
When a Polymarket market moves and you want to know why, "why-is-this-moving" is the answer. It scans for news items, social-sentiment shifts, and on-chain activity that occurred within a recent time window around the move, ranks them by relevance, and presents the most likely drivers.
Inputs
- Price snapshots — market prices sampled regularly. A "move" is a change exceeding a configurable threshold.
- Enrichment signals — news articles, Reddit posts, Google Trends events, all tagged to the market's linked topic.
- Smart Money fills — any tracked-wallet fills on the same market within the window.
Ranking
Each candidate signal is scored by temporal proximity to the move, relevance (topic match), source credibility (NYT/BBC rank higher than anonymous Reddit), and sentiment polarity alignment with the price direction. The top handful are returned.
Caveats
- Correlation, not causation. Signals shown were present around the move, but markets can move without any visible trigger.
- Short-window moves (under an hour) often have no clear attribution. We return "no clear driver" rather than forcing a story.
